The pictures I have included are from Warachikuy – an annual event held in Cusco at the archaeological site of Saqsaywaman.
The event is steeped in Incan tradition and was a ceremony where the best boys officially became men, after participating in a range of tests of skill and strength.
All participants walk up the hill from downtown Cusco
A Chief in a moment of contemplation as the younger boys watch on
The event begins with a tribute to the ancestors
Riot police watch over activities in case of trouble.
Old meets new as a microphone is attached to a Chief
Younger students participate by waving flags and dressing as symbolic animals
Stretcher bearers wait at the bottom in case a participant is injured when they are thrown off the ropes
Thanks for that Cee. Despite battling a pounding headache from some minor altitude sickness, it was a very interesting day out with lots of great visuals to shoot.
Thanks Victoria. Yes, it was a very interesting day indeed. It took more than a bit of negotiating by myself and other “gringo’s” for the local officials to finally let us in. Even though the people at the tourism office had all said it would be fine…
Love all the color in your photo this week. Wonderful entry. 😀
